Forestry Commission

In the AFO-project, Forestry Commission works as WP 3 (Establishing clusters of wood fuel suppliers). FC is also responsible for national and some regional activities, and dissemination activities in the UK.

The Forestry Commission is the Government Department responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting the sustainable management of woodland and increasing their value to society and the environment.

The Forestry Commission in England is recognised and respected as an international leader in sustainable forestry. With reputation built on expertise and an ability to achieve results that benefit people's lives.

These benefits include the unique publicly owned forest estate. Here, millions of visitors enjoy a wide range of recreational activities by exploring woodlands on foot, cycle and horseback or even getting high up in the tree canopy to enjoy some totally different views. As well as timber forests we successfully manage native woodlands and other important habitats for wildlife and conservation such as heathlands and bogs. We try to do this as efficiently as possible, generating sufficient income to pay for these activities

For woodland owners and managers we offer advice and support through the English Woodland Grant Scheme. More widely, we work in partnership with a wide range of national, regional and local organisations to promote and secure the benefits which trees, woods and forests offer to our region. These include a place for recreation and healthy activity, a place to observe and experience wildlife, a source of sustainable woodland products, such as woodfuel and a vital contribution to the landscape.

The Forestry Commission, via it's research division, Forest Research, fund and operate a 'one stop shop' to provide information to anyone in the UK with an interest in biomass derived solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and associated conversion technologies – The Biomass Energy Centre (BEC). The BEC aims to draw together information from existing sources into one easy to use service based around this website and an information enquiryservice to UK individuals, companies, local authorities and other UK organisations.
