Forestry Development Centre Tapio is a governmental forestry expert organisation promoting sustainable forestry. Tapio has more than 100 years of expertise in developing sustainable forestry in Finland and abroad. Core areas of expertise include silviculture and harvesting methods, forest nature management and environmental management; management of forest resource data, development of quality monitoring systems, and development of information technology systems in forestry. Tapio works in close collaboration with research and development organisations in the Finnish forest sector.

Tapio offers a wide range of development services and products for the sustainable management and use of all forests, including bioenergy branch. The services and products developed by Tapio are used by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the regional Forestry Centres, forest owners, contractors and other parties active in the forestry sector. Tapio has around 90 employees and works in close collaboration with the Regional Forestry Centres, that implement practical forestry operations in the field.

Regarding bioenergy, Tapio promotes sustainable use of forest-based fuels through various services and development projects. Tapio established the first recommendations for sustainable energy wood harvesting in 2005 and a model for small-sized energy wood production in young stands as a side product of high quality saw wood in 2006. In addition, Tapio coordinates quality monitoring systems and measurement policies related to energy wood harvesting practicies. Currently we are also involved i.e. in a national bioenergy R&D-projects coordination consortium and two EU-funded international bioenergy promotion projects.
